Due to its geographical region, Thai culture has always been significantly stimulated by India and China in addition to the neighboring cultures of Southeast Asia. However, the first Thai or Siamese state is historically considered to be the Buddhist kingdom of Sukhothai was centered in 1238, followed by the decline and fall of the Khmer empire in the 13th 15th century AD. A century later, Sukhothai’s power was overshadowed by the larger Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya, based in the mid 14th century.
